What's the Difference Between Coaching and Training?

A team meeting is shown. People are sitting around a table.

Did you know that you can either book coaching sessions or add coaching to your training session?

Which raises a fair question: Is that necessary? Is that a "hat on a hat" situation, or do you actually need both?

In this article, we'll outline the differences between coaching and training and how to use both to build a strong training plan for your team.

We'll discuss:

Coaching vs. Training: Why It Matters for Your Learning and Development Plan

You might think you can use 'coaching' and 'training' interchangeably. You can’t. They do not solve the same problem.

Training builds skills and knowledge. Coaching focuses on application and judgment in real situations. When you mix them up, you'll find that your training and development doesn't quite have the impact you expected.

For example, if you use training when coaching is needed, people may understand the material but struggle to apply it under pressure. The issue was never information. It was follow-through. Conversely, if you use coaching when structured training is required, you won't have a clear foundation. Everyone has a slightly different idea of what “good” looks like, which makes improvement harder to measure.

When organizations blur the line, they often conclude that development “didn’t work.” In reality, the wrong tool was used for the problem at hand.

What Is the Difference Between Training and Coaching?

Let's look deeper at the differences between training and coaching.

Training
Coaching
Structured and curriculum-based
Flexible and conversation-based
Focused on building knowledge and skills
Focused on applying skills in real situations
Delivered to a group
Often one-on-one or small group-based
Teaches shared frameworks and best practices
Explores how those frameworks work in your role
Time-bound sessions or courses
Ongoing or short-term targeted support
Measured by knowledge gained
Measured by behaviour change and follow-through

What to Expect During Your Coaching Session

We facilitate coaching sessions for teams or on a one-on-one basis. In either format, the coach and coachees will follow a similar process. We will discuss your goals and what you hope to gain from the sessions. We may assign some reading or other homework to prepare you for your first session.

If you’ve never experienced coaching before, here’s what it actually looks like. During your session, you will:

Reflect and set goals

Talk through current challenges, clarify what you want to improve, and identify strengths you can build on.

Practice with real scenarios

Work through situations you’re facing at work and practice responding the way you would need to in your specific role.

Learn guiding principles

Focus on practical strategies you can adapt to your role, your team, or your leadership style.

Create action steps

Leave each session with clear next steps so you can apply what you discussed immediately.

Use Coaching and Training to Make Your Organization GREAT

At The Great Canadian Training & Consulting Company, we keep things practical, whether you register for coaching or training. We are not here to deliver feel-good sessions full of corporate buzzwords that sound impressive and fade quickly. We focus on usable tools, realistic strategies, and development that supports your organization’s goals.

First, you need to know what your team actually needs. That’s where our Training Strategy Session comes in.

Instead of guessing whether you need training, coaching, or both, we step back and look at the bigger picture with you. What problem are you trying to solve? What should be different afterward? Is this a knowledge gap, a behaviour gap, or both?

From there, we recommend an approach that makes sense for your organization, your timeline, and your budget.
